Since I gave up smoking (it’s only been a week), I have been having some amazing dreams. Last night’s installment was one of the most vivid to date.

The setting was the UK, where I am at the moment, although with a far more liberal helping of Mediterranean sunshine than you could ever hope to find here, and in the dream I was introduced to a new invention by my parents. It looked like a simple roll of unprinted ticket paper, the kind you would have found in a cinema forty or fifty years ago. This paper was different however, in that if you held a strip of it in a certain way towards an object, person or scene, then wet it, all of a sudden it turned into a strip of old-fashioned photos.

The discovery of this amazing stuff bowled me over, and in the dram I set about taking photos of the strips of images with my iPhone, so I could prepare a blog post in this blog. Of course, as I woke up, I realized to my dismay that it was just a dream and the photo ticket-tape doesn’t really exist.

Although I do not consider myself in any way a professional photographer – I have always been more gripped by moving image – I enjoy taking photos very much, and particularly with the amazing apps that are available for the iPhone.

So, as a second-best to the inspiring images I created in my dream, here’s a selection of photos taken with my telephone, using Camera+ and Instagram, two apps I would recommend to anyone who uses the iPhone to take photos (click on the images to see them at full size).

I just received this exciting news in an email from my aunt:

“Oxford University researchers have discovered the heaviest element yet known to science. The new element, Governmentium (symbol=Gv), has one neutron, 25 assistant neutrons, 88 deputy neutrons and 198 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312. These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called pillocks.

Since Governmentium has no electrons, it is inert. However, it can be detected, because it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A tiny amount of Governmentium can cause a reaction that would normally take less than a second, to take from 4 days to 4 years to complete. Governmentium has a normal half-life of 2 to 6 years. It does not decay, but instead undergoes a reorganisation in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places.

In fact, Governmentium’s mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganisation will cause more morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes. This characteristic of moron promotion leads some scientists to believe that Governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a critical concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as a critical morass. When catalysed with money, Governmentium becomes Administratium (symbol=Ad), an element that radiates just as much energy as Governmentium, since it has half as many pillocks but twice as many morons.”

Ever since I was introduced to the world of music, by way of my parents record player, I have been fascinated by recorded sound. That’s not to say that live music is dull for me in any way – quite the contrary – I love playing music with friends and hearing others play, and revel in the spontaneous, transitory nature of live music. That being said, there is something undeniably appealing about hearing the efforts of musicians come out in a recorded, finalised medium, be it vinyl, CD or online. The studio environment allows for ideas to come out, and subsequently be developed, in a way that is completely different in the live context.

As a father of three young kids, my time is obviously a bit limited (right now I work at about the rate of one new track per year!), but whenever the chores are finished and I find myself alone, with a decent stretch of time ahead of me and in the right frame of mind, I try to crack on with the current idea I have in mind.

You can find a very small selection of what I have done over the past few years on Soundcloud. I work under the name of Silverbrother.

Hear my tunes on Soundcloud here.

Stay tuned for a new installment within the next month or so!

In the process of trawling through my hard-drives with the intention of filling the Portfolio section of this site up with my design projects, I have come across a series of bits and pieces that are smaller, yet still significant, jobs I have worked on over the years for clients. Many of them are logos or other designs that in themselves are not diverse enough to occupy a space in the main Portfolio, however I still want to show them as examples of what I do.

With this idea in mind, it seems that the best way to go about it is to publish them here in the Blog section of the site.

So here goes; installment number one is a series of logos done for clients in Spain and the UK. I’d love to hear your opinion on any or all of them.

More to follow!

Hi, and welcome to the blog section of this new site I’m setting up. Progress on the site itself is a little slower than I anticipated, partly due to having to trawl through more than ten years of design projects, and also largely due to being a father of three. I will get there in the end though, and the process is proving to be extremely rewarding, after all not many opportunities for retrospection arise in this fast-paced, productivity-oriented world we have created.

I suppose my real intention with this site is to set the record straight. Since David Roca and I closed the doors of the Aflua offices in Menorca’s capital, Mahon, for the very last time, I have kept the business name and websites up and running, though really my entire way of working has spun around 360º. I am now 100% mobile, in the sense that I can work from anywhere and for anybody with an Internet connection, and am doing so more and more as time goes by. For me, this is a fantastic and inspiring symptom of the age we live in, and offers a flexibility and a lifestyle impossible up until now.

With this in mind, it seems logical to offer a site which is true to where I am really at; a site about me as a designer and human being, working primarily through the Internet for clients in Spain and the UK (though I am open to projects in any other country). I am hoping to offer a more personal insight into who I am, what I do, and the great people I have met along the way, clients and collaborators alike.

So please feel free to take a look around the site, which will become more complete over the coming weeks. I would love your (constructive) opinion on any aspect of the site or my work. You can find me on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Skype and mail me through the Contact section.

I look forward to your comments.

All the best,

Jake Burdess
